THEY ACCUSE QATAR OF PAYING FOR THE 2022 WORLD CUP
ENGLAND .- According to the British newspaper The Sunday Times, the state of Qatar has paid 780 million euros to FIFA to be chosen as the venue for the World Cup to be held in 2022.
The English newspaper published this weekend that, according to leaked documents, the governing body of international football received 356 million euros from the Qatari government 21 days before the election of the venue for the World Cup.
The offer was about the purchase of television rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups (about 1133.4 million dollars each), by Al Jazeera, Qatar’s state broadcaster. The payment would be for Qatar to win the vote in the election of the seat
The contract, according to The Times, included a clause for which 89 million euros would be paid to be paid into a designated FIFA account if Qatar succeeded in voting. The above represents a conflict of interest for FIFA, besides that, it would be a breach of the body’s regulations.
Al Jazeera is owned by the Emir of Qatar, the main defender of the country’s bid to organize the championship.
This supposes a violation of the regulations of FIFA that prohibits entities related to the candidacy from making financial offers about the process of choosing a venue.
In the same way, in the published documents appears the signature of Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of PSG, of the group bein Media and Qatar Sports Investments as general manager of Al Jazeera Satellite Network.
In that sense, the clause in the contract was disguised as a snapper for production costs. However, filming and editing work is usually paid by FIFA.
The investigation of the British newspaper also proved that in 2013, Qatar presented another secret offer of 427 million euros for television rights. Thus, the total offer of Qatar would be just over 780 million euros.
According to the experts consulted by The Sunday Times, it is difficult for such amount to respond only to commercial reasons and to five times what was being paid in the region.
Only the offer of 356 million euros for television rights is a record. Also, it was strange because it was the only one that FIFA accepted even before the World Cup was known. According to the revealed documents, the agency will receive a millionaire payment next month according to the terms of the contract.
